Minor in Sustainable Cities

The Minor in Sustainable Cities provides students in many disciplines the opportunity to gain further understanding of the field of urban sustainability while introducing them to concepts and techniques relevant to all disciplines. The minor is open to students from any college or major with sophomore and good academic standing. Students may apply credit hours from courses taken prior to application to the minor.

Sustainable Cities Minor Requirements (12 credit hours)

The following two courses

  • US 130 Principles of Urban Sustainability (3 credits) 1
  • US 230 Practices of Sustainable Cities (3 credits) 2

One of the following courses

  • US 390 Sustainability Internship
  • COMM 309 Environmental Communication (3 credits)
  • ECON 370 Environmental Economics (3 credits)
  • PA 240 Environmental Policy (3 credits)
  • PUBH 320 Ecologies of Health and Modern Life (3 credits)

One of the following courses

  • LAS 493 Topics in Sustainability and Energy (3 credits)
  • CME 440 Cities and Sustainable Infrastructure (3 credits)
  • UPP 493 Topics in Urban Planning and Policy (3 credits)

A GPA of 2.50/4.00 is required in courses taken towards the minor.

1 US 130 is a requirement for the BA in Urban Studies. Urban Studies majors can pursue the minor, but they cannot apply US 130 to both the major and the minor. As a result, the course can be replaced with one of the 300-or 400-level courses in the selective lists above.
2 Urban Studies majors who pursue the minor will take US 230 to fulfill the requirements of the minor, and the course cannot be used as a selective for the major.
