The Master of City Design program offers immersive design experience as well as many opportunities for students to make professional connections with leading practitioners in Chicago and beyond.

  1. MCD students visit Chicago suburb Oak Park with UIC Professor Emeritus Charlie Hoch and MCD Director Sanjeev Vidyarthi. With built-in trips to some of the region’s most significant architectural sites, MCD students gain valuable insight into enduring examples of effective city design as a central part of their curriculum.
  2. During a day trip to Plano, Illinois, MCD students get an inside tour of Mies Van Der Rohe’s famous Farnsworth House alongside MCD Director Sanjeev Vidyarthi and CUPPA Assistant Professor Sevin Yildiz.
  3. The Discovery Partners Institute is a new, interdisciplinary research collaborative founded by U of I system to facilitate important advances shaping the future of state economy. MCD students take a class in this DPI space and gain immediate access to industry-leading experts in various fields.
  4. As part of their inaugural studio, MCD students present interim design work to Phil Enquist, Consulting Partner at Skidmore, Ownings, & Merill, Dawveed Scully, Senior Urban Designer at SOM, Professor of Urbanism Emily Talen from University of Chicago and MCD Faculty. Within weeks of starting the MCD program, students already have tangible experience producing cutting-edge design work, with access to leading practitioners and scholars to guide their work.
