The Nathalie P. Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement is pleased to invite you to our 40th Anniversary Symposium! Please join us for breakfast to celebrate 40 years of working with communities, and for conversation concerning Chicago’s growing inequality and the struggle for equal right to the city.
Throughout its history, the Voorhees Center has been at the forefront of helping people address the challenges and opportunities facing Chicago’s neighborhoods. Reflecting back on our 40 years, our work has evolved with the needs of communities and their changing built environments. We began our work amid an era of prolonged and profound urban disinvestment. We were an integral part of the public housing debate, as changing policies and a shifting development landscape meant displacement for many of Chicago’s most vulnerable populations. With renewed interest in urban locales, we were at the forefront of understanding how gentrification was impacting our communities. And as the divides and inequality in our city have deepened in the last decade, we are working to understand what this means for communities and how to facilitate solutions to our city’s most pressing challenges. Though our focus has evolved over the years, our mission has not—to work with people and communities as they plan for a more just, equitable, and bright future.
