UPP’s John Betancur Awarded 2019 Silver Circle Award
John J. Betancur, Professor of Urban Planning & Policy, is being awarded the 2019 Silver Circle Award! Professor Betancur has been a faculty member in CUPPA for over thirty years. He has worked extensively in community and economic development in the U.S. and Latin America, authoring many pieces on globalization, gentrification, and relations between African American and Latino populations. Most recently, Professor Betancur published work on planning strategies in Medellin, Colombia in "Urban Assemblages and Disassemblages: Medellin's Hegemonic and Counter-Hegemonic Forums". Other noteworthy research includes his 2000 book, "The Collaborative City: Opportunities and Struggles for Blacks and Latinos in U.S.A", which compares experiences of grassroots racial minority community initiatives in U.S. cities. While Professor Betancur's research shows tremendous depth of planning knowledge and understanding of the forces that shape the trajectory of Chicago and many other cities, he also shows great compassion and commitment to his students. Thank you for steadfastly serving the CUPPA community for so many years, Professor Betancur! Congratulations on this incredible achievement.
