Stacey Sutton Gave Keynote Address At NAACP Freedom Fund Gala

Stacey Sutton

Stacey Sutton, assistant professor of Urban Planning and Policy, keynoted the NAACP (Austin, TX branch) Freedom Fund Gala on December 1.  Sutton spoke to the 750 attendees on the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and its Impact on Austin, "As we commemorate the landmark civil rights legislation and other legislative wins, we must remember that legislation is neither permanent nor sufficient. As we commemorate the Fair Housing Act and consider its impact on Austin and other cities, we must also remember why the legislation was necessary and how injustice manifests in our cities and neighborhoods today. Developing and sustaining the communities we want requires peoples’ incessant vigilance and unflinching resistance to the erosion of our human rights. I include the right to decent housing and the right to remain in place as basic human rights.
