MUPP Patrick Magoon Receives Alumni Achievement Award
Now more than ever it’s common to have multiple careers throughout a lifetime. But after receiving his master’s degree in Urban Planning and Public Policy in 1978, alumni Patrick Magoon found something worth sticking around for at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children‘s Hospital of Chicago.
Magoon started working at the hospital as an intern working on the hospital’s master plan. Since then he has risen through the ranks to become President and CEO.
“The mission of Children’s Memorial is outstanding,” Magoon has said. “You look around and you know why we’re here. There are fun parts of my job - the people, civic leaders, and the political process keep me engaged.”
This month Magoon received an Alumni Achievement Award for his many accomplishments at the hospital. Under his leadership, Lurie has increased the number of children it serves by 50 percent, quadrupled its National Institute of Health funding, and become the nation’s first pediatric hospital to earn the prestigious Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
After receiving a distinguished UIC Alumni Achievement Award at an awards luncheon on October 11, Magoon visited the College of Urban Planning and Public Policy to speak with students.
“I was very lucky to get his perspective on leadership and take valuable notes,” one student said. “The meeting was definitely a memorable experience.”
The Alumni Achievement Award is given annually by Chancellor Amiridis and the UIC Alumni Association in recognition of the remarkable success they have achieved in their lives and work. Magoon was nominated jointly by the UIC College of Urban Planning & Public Affairs as well as a colleague and fellow CUPPA alum at Lurie Children’s Hospital.
