IRRPP’s Amanda Lewis Quoted In Sun-Times On CPD Incident With State Rep

Kam Buckner

The Chicago Sun-Times quotes Amanda Lewis, director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy at UIC, in a story about an incident involving a Chicago Police officer who made an investigatory stop on State Rep. Kam Buckner outside a South Loop store. “There’s a long history in Chicago of racial disparities and how people experience the police,” said Lewis, who is also professor of sociology and African American studies, and LAS distinguished professor. “And the class dimensions of being a politician and lawyer, those aren’t protective. What matters the most as the kind of signifier in that moment is your race, and the consequences can be really dangerous.” https://bit.ly/2YE4q5x (subscription required)
