GCI’s Beth Gutelius Responds To Somali Worker Negotiations
Beth Gutelius, GCI Senior Research Specialist, was cited in a recent New York Times article on the strides made by Somali Amazon employees in Minnesota to negotiate better warehouse working conditions. For the first time in the U.S., Amazon management is reportedly "coming to the table" to participate in these talks amid pressure from Somali workers. Even as Amazon attempts to increase efficiency in their warehouse facilities, workers from East Africa have leverage in their demands. Gutelius argues, "Because there is such a density in that work force, at this stage in the game, Amazon would have a very difficult time replacing that many workers, particularly at this peak season."
