Dr. Rachel Weber Featured in Article on Chicago’s Abandoned School Buildings
Professor of Urban Planning and Policy Dr. Rachel Weber was interviewed as part of a Chicago Sun Times story on Chicago's abandoned school buildings. In 2013, Chicago closed an unprecedented 50 schools due to underenrollment and poor academic performance, mainly in predominantly Black neighborhoods on the South and West sides. Over half of those school buildings remain unused and a burden on surrounding communities despite promises that those properties would be converted to more productive uses. Dr. Weber offered her suggestions for how the city could have done a better job ensuring that these properties were converted to better serve their communities.
