Local land use regulation plays a key role in defining the built environment. Zoning reform efforts, such as form-based codes, new urbanism, and smart growth, have emerged in recent years to combat sprawl, single use development, high-reliance on automobiles, and limited opportunities for physical activity. This presentation will summarize a previously conducted NIH-funded study that involved the largest nationwide evaluation of active living-oriented provisions in zoning and land use codes in effect as of 2010 and review current study efforts which aim to examine longitudinal changes in the adoption of zoning reform efforts between 2010 to 2020 in over 2,000 U.S. jurisdictions. A few preliminary results will also be shared.
