Download iCal FileJoin us for a thought-provoking Friday Forum presentation by Dr. Ivis García, Associate Professor at Texas A&M University and proud alumna of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. García’s dissertation focused on her transformative work in Humboldt Park, Chicago—a community at the heart of Puerto Rican identity in the Midwest. Her research in Humboldt Park has inspired numerous articles and laid the foundation for her co-authored book, Puerto Ricans in Illinois. This compelling book delves into the cultural, economic, and political contributions of Puerto Ricans in Illinois, mapping the pedacito de patria (little piece of home) that they have created in cities across the state. From Chicago’s iconic Paseo Boricua to smaller communities, Dr. García explores the complexities of migration, cultural preservation, and community advocacy, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Maria. With a rich blend of archival research, historical analysis, and personal interviews, Puerto Ricans in Illinois sheds light on the paradoxes Puerto Ricans face as they navigate the gap between home and country, contributing to the health and vitality of Illinois while maintaining their unique cultural identity.
Hosted by CUPPS, Coalition of Urban Planning PhD Students.
Lunch will be served.
