About the Workshop: Join IRRPP, the Scholars Strategy Network, Northwestern's Institute for Policy Research, and the University of Chicago's Employment Instability, Family Well-being, and Social Policy Network for a workshop developed by the Scholars Strategy Network national office. Led by Dominick Doemer, this workshop is a hands-on training for scholars who are looking to do more media work and need advice on how to prepare for interviews and build relationships with members of the media. Participants will learn how to respond when a journalist calls, communicate their research in a clear and effective manner, identify what reporters are looking for in interviews with scholars, and maintain media relationships. The workshop is great for all scholars, whether you've done media work before or are just starting to think about public engagement.

Come with questions about how to talk to reporters and walk away feeling ready for your next interview! All attendees will receive customized resources and tipsheets on engaging the media.

After the workshop, there will be a panel discussion hosted by Chicago Tribune Journalist Nara Schoenberg featuring Dick W. Simpson, Professor of Political Sciences, UIC, Aldon Morris, Leon Forrest Professor of Sociology and African American Studies, Northwestern, and Susan J Lambert, School of Social Service Administration, University of Chicago.

About the Scholars Strategy Network: The Scholars Strategy Network seeks to improve public policy and strengthen democracy by connecting scholars and their research to policymakers, citizens associations, and the media. SSN members spell out the implications of their research in ways that are broadly accessible. They engage in consultations with policymakers in Washington DC and state capitals. They make regular contributions to the media and share findings and ideas with journalists and bloggers. Many SSN scholars also work with advocates and civic organizations to address pressing public challenges at the national, state, and local levels.

About the Series: The goal of the Policy 101 Workshop Series is to increase the impact and visibility of UIC scholars’ research. Policy 101 workshops provide UIC faculty and graduate students with focused training that increases their ability to participate in public policy conversations. Policy 101 workshops are taught by professionals and academics who are experts at translating academic research into policy-ready documents, policy presentations and civic engagement and will be offered bi-annually on a rotating basis.
