The Department of Public Administration's Research & Policy Seminar Series will host Tomás Olivier (Florida Atlantic University) on Fri. March 25, 12 noon to 1 p.m. Institutions are the rules of the game that guide policy behavior. Yet, the policy and administration literatures on institutions and institutional design have been developed largely in parallel to those studying policy behavior and networks, with little cross-pollination. Drawing insights from both, this talk will present an approach that applies social network analysis tools to study institutional design. Targeted attention will focus on recent applications of this approach in the study of governing arrangements for the management of shared water resources. Using recent results to understand issues of institutional fit in the governance of water in the state of Nebraska, the talk will discuss future challenges and possibilities in the application of social network analysis to study institutional design in complex policy settings.
