Zitlali Morales, PhD, along with Ramona Alcalá, PhD, and Megan Marshall, ABD in Hispanic & Italian Studies, will be presenting their research, “Amplifying Latinx Families' Language Education Rights: Luchando for Urban Dual Language Bilingual Education.”
During the 2022-2023 academic year, Dr. Morales and her team conducted workshops with Latinx, predominantly Spanish-speaking parents around the Chicagoland area. Their culminating activity was a Dual Language Bilingual Education Parent Summit hosted at UIC. During the summit, the team shared resources with parents (such as bilingual book vendors and a talk regarding bilingual speech-language services) and invited them to participate in a focus group conversation. As a group, parents shared their experiences and hopes with respect to language services in school and beyond.
