Report of People Experiencing Homelessness in Chicago Released
The 2025 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count report, a collaboration between UIC’s Nathlie P. Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement and Chicago’s Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS), was released last week. The PIT Count is a one-night count conducted to estimate the number of people experiencing homelessness.
The 2025 PIT Count estimate found a 60% decrease in individuals experiencing homelessness on the night of the count compared to 2024. While this is in part due to new housing and shelter resources, the largest driver of this decrease was the reduced number of New Arrivals/Newcomers seeking shelter services in Chicago in 2025. Black/African American people continue to be disproportionately impacted by homelessness in Chicago. While less than one-third of Chicago’s total population is Black/African American, 53% of the total homeless population in the 2025 PIT identified as Black/African American.
