Women in Planning and Public Affairs (WPPA) at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Latino Planning Organization for Development, Education, and Regeneration (LPODER), and the Society for Black Urban Planners (SBUP), present “Women in Planning: Gender, Race, and the Workplace.” The event will take place on Friday, March 16th from 9:30 am -12: 30 pm and will be comprised of two panels: one focused on the professional development of women within the planning and public administration fields; the second about the changing role of women in planning throughout history.

The career-focused panel will initiate conversation around the professional experiences of women working in planning and public affairs. Throughout the panel, you will hear from women from various backgrounds and in different levels of their career about their trajectories and personal experiences in the workplace. Panelists will be asked to reflect on how their paths have been distinctively impacted by being a woman, as well as ways they have successfully navigated through the spheres of planning, policy, and public administration. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn from the panel's wide-ranging experiences and to come away with a better sense of the challenges and rewards inherent in today's workplace.

The second panel will initiate conversation around historical and current roles women have played/are playing in the planning and policy fields. It will also showcase the changing nature of planning issues that primarily impact women and women of color. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn from the panel's wide-ranging experiences and to come away with a better sense of how to continue to incorporate non-dominant perspectives and social justice in their work.
