About Summer Education Workshop: Advancing Racial Justice in Schools
IRRPP's Summer Education Workshop is a 4-day intensive workshop intended for educators. The purpose of the retreat is to develop a cadre of teacher leaders and teacher scholars who will help to improve educational experiences and opportunities for underserved communities. Participants in the program will acquire new knowledge and skills and become embedded in strong networks of support. They will bring these expanded tools and knowledge into their classrooms and schools to further the process of institutional and community development.
The workshop is structured to include a competitively selected cohort of 50 participants. All teachers in K-12 schools are eligible to apply. The program consists of several parts:
- an intensive 4-day summer professional development institute
- follow-up meetings to develop projects (e.g., curriculum development)
During the workshop facilitators will provide intensive professional development including covering questions such as:
- What is race/ethnicity and why does it matter in schools?
- How do our own identities shape our ability to be effective in the classroom?
- How do racial dynamics shape the historical and social context of urban education?
- How do we integrate questions of racial justice into our classrooms and curricula?
- How do we help students understand pressing racial issues in their communities?
- How do we improve educational outcomes for all our students?
- How do we help our students to have greater understanding of the history of their communities and help them to understand the role they can play in developing/transforming their communities?
