Join the Coalition of Urban Planning Ph.D Students (CUPPS) on March 31, 2023, at noon, as we host Luke Green, PhD candidate in Economic Geography in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, and the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University (UK). He will be discussing his research on the financialization of higher education institutions in the UK, focusing on the changing roles of elite universities as investors in, and developers of, urban real estate.

In the context of a dramatic growth in speculative and financialized forms of real estate development being undertaken by (and on behalf of) UK universities over the past two decades, Luke’s research seeks to understand precisely how—and why—universities finance, fund and deliver their capital investments. By illuminating the financializing flows, rationales, actors, and processes which underpin universities’ increasingly experimental interventions in their urban landscapes, Luke’s research offers to provide novel insights into the causes, consequences, extent, and limits of financialization in UK higher education.

Food will be provided for in-person attendees!
