Urban Planning and Policy Professor Emeritus Dave Ranney has co-written a play with Donna Russell titled, "Dear Rhoda." There will be a staged reading of the play at the Newberry Library on Sat., Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. The play will be performed by the Shakespeare Project of Chicago and directed by Peter Garino. Tickets are free but reservations are required.
You can make reservations at http://newberry.org/calendar. Scroll down to the calendar to the date of the play and make reservations. It is a powerful love story between Rhoda and her lover Jerry whose relationship is threatened by illness, the "red scare," and anti-Semitic hatred. The play takes place mostly in the Chicago Dil Pickle Club which was near Bughouse Square. This club was the center of the bohemian counterculture in the Chicago of the twenties. It was frequented by notable lefties like Carl Sandburg, Clarence Darrow, and labor leaders like Jack Jones, Lizzie Davis, and Martha Biegler.
